Hooking up is a great way to make new friends and to make things interesting. However, once you are inside the Worldcon and its gizillion programming tracks, you might not see each other all day. Not to worry though, evenings are party filled and parties are loads of fun for groups (look out for great bid parties and come and see myself and other South African fans at the SFSA (Science Fiction South Africa) party). Plus, when you do end up in the same panel/event, then you will enjoy hooking up. Also, eating meals together can be great too. Remember that for Science Fiction and Fantasy readers, who will be at their first Worldcon, the Worldcon will be biggest and best convention you have ever been to. It will be fantastic!

Finally, I have included a copy of a reply that I made to a similar first timer:

<Once you are there watch out for programming items geared towards folks like you. Every Worldcon I have been to (only 4 so far) has had programming items that will help you to get the most out of your Worldcon experience. Also, the SF&F crowd is a friendly (if sometimes shy) one, so don’t be afraid to ask questions of the people around you.

Also, arrive at the Worldcon fully refreshed and not short of sleep, because for five days you might be tempted to forgo most sleep, because you will be in a fannish heaven, the SF&F reader’s Disneyland. Just be sure to get some sleep, eat at least one good meal a day and don’t skip those baths/showers ;)

Grant
